Mario Kart 8 60fps 720p Resolution: The Benefits of Playing in High Definition and High Frame Rate

And I wish I could opt for 720p at 60 frames for 3+ player splitscreen. I definitely prefer framerate over resolution, especially since each area of the split screen is so small that you can't notice a resolution difference, anyway.

Mario Kart 8 60fps 720p Resolution

Technically, Switch pushes Mario Kart 8's native resolution from 720p on Wii U up to a full 1080p while docked. The real party trick though, is that Nintendo's new hardware can run this as a pure handheld experience, making it the most technically demanding Mario Kart game to ever run on a portable. You get the full-fat Mario Kart 8 experience on the go here, with no compromises bar resolution, which drops to native 720p - a pixel match for the Switch's 6.2-inch IPS display. Image quality is otherwise unaltered and the frame-rate remains locked at 60fps, just as it is when docked.

As an aside, the split-screen multiplayer works just as it did on Wii U. The two-player split-screen stays at 60fps on Switch, but pushing that to three or four players immediately caps the frame-rate to 30. The logic works in the same way as Wii U too; the top and bottom screens refresh in an alternating order: top first, then bottom. In effect, the screen still outputs at 60fps, and the HUD elements update at 60Hz as well, but all gameplay is cut in half, making controls feel a little muggier. For consistency, it's a shame we can't have all modes running at 60, even by dropping the resolution from 1080p to achieve it.

But equally, we can look at this in another way: Switch is constructed as a handheld first and foremost, and as a successor to Mario Kart 7 on 3DS - released six years prior - we're looking at a huge leap in every way. Even at 720p, the bump in visual quality is remarkable compared to the 3DS' 400x240 image. Using retro tracks like DK Jungle and Melody Motorway as comparison points, you can see how far Nintendo went to rework the level assets for more powerful hardware. You get higher quality textures, higher-precision lighting and materials, sharper resolution alpha effects, and revamped track geometry to support the anti-gravity driving. Background detail is completely redesigned from scratch, and while the basic framework is clearly still the same, the delivery is vastly more refined on Switch.

When users switch to portable mode, the game's resolution will drop to 720p, which is the same resolution as the Switch's capacitive touch screen display. But no matter how gamers choose to play the game, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will run 60 frames per second.

As revealed during the Nintendo Treehouse presentation where the Big N went into more detail about upcoming Nintendo Switch games, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will feature 1080p resolution and run at 60 frames per second when playing it on a TV. By comparison, the original Mario Kart 8 on Wii U was able to maintain 60 frames per second when playing with two or less players on one console, but its resolution was a native 720p.

Mario Kart 8 is the fist Mario Kart title to run in high definition, which marks a considerable leap forward in graphical fidelity, texture quality, and overall detail. The game runs at a native 720p resolution, running at a smooth 60fps. The game drops to 30fps when playing three or four player multiplayer.

Game Reactor went hands-on with the game and was able to detail out the resolution and frame rate for both the base game and the new Bowser's Fury mode. Super Mario 3D World will run at 1080p, 60 FPS while the Switch is docked and 720p, 60 FPS when playing portably. Bowser's Fury will run at 720p, 60 FPS while docked and 720p, 30 FPS when playing portably. It should be noted that the resolution of the latter could possibly be higher since the source didn't clarify between docked and undocked.

havent been commenting hear awhile, waiting for digital foundry to expose nintendrones. so much damage control from nintendogs now after they found out iwata cheated them on framerate and resolutions. last gen mario kart 8

"Performance was what mattered most to us, so we aim to make sure that the game runs at 60 fps docked and undocked," Dunham explained. That effort to maintain the performance of Rocket League as it plays on other systems is in part why the game will have a native resolution of 720p.

Apparently, the outlet had a chance to speak directly with Nintendo at PAX East, and here they reconfirmed that the game will run at 1080p and 60 FPS (we've known this since January), although this is specifically referenced as the resolution and frame-rate in dock mode only. When played in handheld mode it's set to 720p and 60 FPS.

It's a testament to the added content that I got this far in review without talking about the improved graphics of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Like Mario Kart 8, Deluxe still holds onto a rock solid 60fps in both docked and portable modes. In portable, it's 720p resolution, just like the Wii U version. In docked mode, the game jumps to 1080p and though you'd think it wouldn't be noticeable, it is. Mario Kart 8 was always a bright and beautiful game, but Deluxe in docked mode adds an additional level of clarity to the entire thing.

lol wut? So far only Wind Waker HD runs in 1080p. 3D World and DK Tropical Freeze both run in 720p@60fps. MK8 will probably be 720p@60fps too, however I think the rumors of Smash being 1080p might turn out to be true after all. 2ff7e9595c
